I don’t think anyone would admit that they prefer a quick fix over a solution to their health problem. But I would also say that a lack of knowledge and the lack of self-discipline is a huge contribution to the health crises in our country. We have an abundant of information on health and ways to stay healthy. Why doesn’t that translate into usable knowledge and a healthier society?
"Our health seems to be much more valuable after we lose it." ~Unknown Author
"Take care of your body. It's the only place you have to live." ~Jim Rohn
The majority of Americans take their health for granted until there’s something wrong, sadly it’s when diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and spinal degeneration have already manifested. This type of approach or lack of approach is taking years off people’s lives at the expense of their loved ones having to grieve prematurely. If you look at the definition of Health, it’s defined as the optimal of mental, physical and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity (Dorland’s Dictionary). If you really look at what that means, it’s the optimal, meaning the best you can be weather you feel it or not. To be the best you can be means you have to work at it. Jack Lalanne, the fitness guru from the 1950’s who is well into his 90’s today, says that his debt to being healthy is working-out 2 hours per day. That's what he pays to be healthy. The only nutrients he puts into his body, are the ones that his body are going to use to make him healthy. He says he frowns upon people who complain about their health then pray to get healthier, while doing nothing to gain health. He says you have the God given tools and knowledge to get out there and earn it and BE healthy. He says God gave each of us the ability to choose to be healthy.
If we judge health on how we feel, that means the body will deteriorate and degenerate until symptoms show up. Typically symptoms don’t show up until your body has already broken down by 60%. Once symptoms arise, that’s when our insurance will cover for care and that’s when our medical doctors will see you. Think about that for a moment. Our health care is based on symptoms and once your doctor’s see you, your body has broken down to a point of crises. That’s a contradiction to health according to the Dorland’s meaning of health. It’s also a contradiction to call care in our hospitals and clinics health care because that has nothing to do with being and keeping health. Why do we maintain our cars with regular oil and filter changes as well as rotate the tires. We want to get more miles out of that car. We know that if we let it break down, it’s more expensive and more difficult to fix. How about from our bodies? Why isn’t there the same recognition? The quick fixes of today are the chronic illnesses of tomorrow. The lack of self discipline leads to the chronic illnesses of tomorrow. The bottom line is the lack of knowledge and self discipline is the difference between living a short and potentially suffering life versus living a healthy fulfilling life. You get to choose.
Keys to health are: 1.) Optimizing the one thing that controls ALL health - an optimally functioning nervous system and spinal structure through chiropractic wellness care. 2.) Optimizing the nutrients you put in your body and avoiding non-nutritional based foods i.e. junk food. 3.) Exercising to keep the body young and active. 4.) Reduce stress. 5.) Avoid medication - get your body working so you never have to rely on medication.
